Tips for a Successful Graduation Night

Congratulations on completing this phase of your education. Now you are even better prepared for high-er education or additional employment opportunities.

The graduation ceremony is an important way for you and your family and friends to celebrate your achievement.

A few tips from previous graduations might help keep the ceremony special for you, for the other graduates, and for all the guests

.Attend the graduation rehearsal. Feeling confident about what you are expected to do on

graduation night will help lower your stress level and let you enjoy the moment.

On the night of graduation, be sure to arrive at the auditorium on time or a little earlier. You may need time for arranging your cap and gown and taking pictures, but most important is lining up on time for the march into the auditorium.

Plan ahead so that you will be able to wear the requested clothes: dark shoes and a blouse/dress with a collar for the ladies, and dark pants and a white shirt with a collar for the men. The appro-priate clothing will help make your graduation pictures real keepsakes.

Since there may be people who are allergic to strong smells, please be considerate and leave off colognes or perfumes after your bath. It gets hot wearing caps and gowns in a crowded room in May, and strong smells tend to make the heat worse.

If you can pass the following tips on to your family and friends, they can also help keep the night special for you and the other graduates.

Since some families may be videotaping the occasion of this special night in the life of one of their family members, it will be important to keep distracting noises to a minimum. If a fussy child cannot be satisfied with a bottle or pacifier, taking him or her outside will make it easier for the rest of the audience to hear and enjoy the ceremony.

Before entering the auditorium, all graduates and guests who are not on emergency call should turn off cell phones and pagers in order to respect the rights of others. Also, once the ceremony begins, friends and family should not create distractions by leaving their seats.

To allow space for the graduates to line up for the graduation procession, family and friends should be seated in the auditorium as soon as they arrive at Waco Hall. At the conclusion of the ceremony, family and friends should remain seated until all graduates have exited. Preserving the dignity of the processional and the recessional is a way to honor all of you graduates for your achievements.

Here’s wishing you a graduation night to cherish in your memories!

Graduation is May 16, 2013 at Waco Hall at 7:30 p.m.!

Honoring Central Texas 2012-2013 Literacy Volunteers

Olga Ramirez, volunteer at MCC Connections and Family Learning Center in McGregor, was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the annual Central Texas Literacy Coalition (CTLC) volunteer recognition reception recently held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.  Shirley Crockett, CTLC board member and MCC Adult Education Programs director, presented the award to Ms. Ramirez and recognized over 20 volunteers for their service to students enrolled in adult education classes throughout the area.

Joe Nesbitt, founder of the Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) program sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, was the special guest speaker.  He reminded literacy teachers and volunteers of three points:  1) to never give up on helping a student strive for success, 2) that with great power comes great responsibility, and 3) to always be kind in day-to-day contacts, especially with students.  Over the past seven years, LEAD has awarded $125,000 in scholarships to Waco area graduates.

Ryn Farmer, CTLC president, presided over the ceremonies.  Fran Hendrix, along with MCC Adult Education faculty and staff, planned the reception and provided refreshments.  A highlight of the afternoon was a Best Dessert contest.  Everyone enjoyed sampling and voting on the desserts provided by MCC Adult Education faculty and staff
