Olga Ramirez, volunteer at MCC Connections and Family Learning Center in McGregor, was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the annual Central Texas Literacy Coalition (CTLC) volunteer recognition reception recently held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Shirley Crockett, CTLC board member and MCC Adult Education Programs director, presented the award to Ms. Ramirez and recognized over 20 volunteers for their service to students enrolled in adult education classes throughout the area.
Joe Nesbitt, founder of the Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) program sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, was the special guest speaker. He reminded literacy teachers and volunteers of three points: 1) to never give up on helping a student strive for success, 2) that with great power comes great responsibility, and 3) to always be kind in day-to-day contacts, especially with students. Over the past seven years, LEAD has awarded $125,000 in scholarships to Waco area graduates.
Ryn Farmer, CTLC president, presided over the ceremonies. Fran Hendrix, along with MCC Adult Education faculty and staff, planned the reception and provided refreshments. A highlight of the afternoon was a Best Dessert contest. Everyone enjoyed sampling and voting on the desserts provided by MCC Adult Education faculty and staff.
